DNS4EU Goes live: A European Alternative to Google and Cloudflare DNS, Powered by Whalebone

Whalebone has officially launched the DNS4EU Public Service – a free, privacy-focused, and secure DNS resolver designed to protect citizens across the European Union. This initiative is a key milestone in the EU’s broader effort to enhance digital sovereignty and cybersecurity for all Europeans.

What Is DNS4EU Public Service?

DNS4EU Public Service is a publicly accessible DNS resolver that offers EU citizens a safer and more private internet experience. It blocks access to malicious domains, adheres strictly to GDPR, and ensures that all DNS resolution occurs within the EU digital space. The service is part of the wider DNS4EU project, which aims to protect 100 million people through a combination of public and commercial service offerings.

Available DNS4EU Public Service Options

Users can choose from five DNS resolver configurations tailored to different needs:

  1. Protective Resolution
  2. Protective + Child Protection
  3. Protective + Ad blocking
  4. Protective + Child Protection + Ad blocking
  5. Unfiltered Resolution

Public Service Options

Each option supports DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT), ensuring encrypted and secure DNS queries.

DNS4EU Ecosystem

The DNS4EU Public Service is one part of a larger ecosystem. It is one of four pillars in the DNS4EU project.

The remaining pillars are:

  • DNS4GOV (DNS4EU for Governments): Provides centralised DNS protection for government institutions, including hospitals, schools, and public offices.
  • Aura Infrastructure (DNS4EU for Telcos): Integrates secure DNS services directly into telecom operator networks.
  • Threat Intelligence Exchange : a platform for sharing and coordinating cyber threats between partners.

Together, these services aim to provide comprehensive DNS security across different sectors, contributing to the goal of protecting 100 million users.

 Strengthening Threat Intelligence Across Europe

A cornerstone of DNS4EU is its collaboration with EU CERTs and CSIRTs to enhance threat intelligence sharing. The project operates its own Malware Information Sharing Platform (MISP), allowing real-time propagation of threat data to DNS resolvers across the EU. This ensures that a threat identified in one country can be swiftly blocked in others, enhancing the collective cybersecurity posture of the EU.

Threat Intelligence applied on our public DNS resolvers is just the beginning of what DNS4EU can offer. We invite ISPs, Telecoms, and Governments to engage with us and explore the full potential of our threat intelligence capabilities. By strengthening collaboration and sharing insights, we can build a more resilient and proactive cybersecurity environment across Europe.

Powered by Whalebone and a Pan-European Consortium

The DNS4EU Public Service is operated by Whalebone, the consortium leader and a Czech cybersecurity company known for protecting millions of users worldwide. However, this initiative wouldn't have been possible without the dedication, expertise, and collaboration of the entire DNS4EU consortium.

The consortium comprises 13 core members from 10 EU countries, bringing together a diverse mix of private companies, research institutions, national CERTs, and public sector organisations.

Together, these organisations form a robust and resilient foundation for DNS4EU, ensuring that the service is not only technologically advanced but also aligned with the diverse needs and regulations of EU member states.
