When Whalebone officially launched the DNS4EU Public Service in June 2025, it marked an important milestone in Europe’s push for digital sovereignty and security. Just two months later, adoption and engagement are already strong – and the momentum has carried over to DNS4GOV, Whalebone’s commercial Protective DNS (PDNS) solution designed specifically for governments, public institutions, and critical infrastructure providers.
A Trusted Alternative to Non-EU DNS Providers: 16 Million Threats Blocked Daily – and Counting
DNS4EU, led by Whalebone with 13 partner organisations from 10 countries, was created under the European Commission’s vision of building secure, sovereign, and privacy-compliant DNS offerings for European citizens and institutions. Operated entirely within the EU, the Public Service offers citizens and organisations a transparent and voluntary DNS option, ensuring data stays inside European borders while aligning fully with GDPR principles.
Marcus Dusi, CEO of CAIRO AG, stated in a LinkedIn post,
“DNS4EU is designed from the ground up according to the principles of the GDPR. IP addresses are anonymised, personal usage data is not stored, and all DNS queries remain entirely within the EU infrastructure.”
Since its launch, DNS4EU has been blocking around 16 million malicious domains daily, with malware accounting for more than 70% of those threats. This includes phishing sites, command-and-control (C&C) infrastructure, and botnet domains – blocked before they can reach users. The results are clear: DNS4EU is already protecting millions of European citizens against nefarious actors, while drawing attention from privacy advocates, technology media, and cybersecurity experts across Europe.
Why Governments Are Turning to DNS4GOV
The success of the Public Service has sparked a surge of interest in DNS4GOV, Whalebone’s highly scalable enterprise-grade DNS security solution built for national agencies, ministries, municipalities, healthcare networks, and the education sector.
Richard Malovic, CEO of Whalebone, stated:
“The overwhelmingly positive response to DNS4EU shows that Europe is ready to take control of its critical internet infrastructure. With our Whalebone DNS4GOV commercial offering, we are equipping governments with a secure, compliant, and future-proof DNS service that protects institutions and citizens alike.”
Whalebone DNS4GOV was developed under the DNS4EU mandate to ensure that governments and public sector agencies could access protective DNS at scale. It offers:
- Advanced threat protection – Stops malware, phishing, and botnets at the DNS layer.
- GDPR-compliant operation – All data stays within the EU.
- Customisable policies – Adaptable to national or regional requirements.
- Scalable architecture – From single ministries to nationwide deployments.
- Regulatory alignment – Simplifies compliance with EU cybersecurity and data protection frameworks.
Already, several European governments are piloting or rolling out DNS4GOV, and interest is extending beyond the EU to partners in regions seeking sovereignty-respecting cybersecurity solutions.
As Guillaume-Jean Herbiet of Restena (.lu) explained:“
We needed a solution that can catch phishing campaigns mimicking local banks or authentication services.”
Damien Carbonnel, Chief Cloud Officer at Chromegnon, stated in a LinkedIn post,
“Finally a real DNS service in the EU, co-founded by the European Union! I've tested it and it works very well! Bonus point, they are offering 5 different public Resolvers. I've tested the Protective + Child Protection + Ad blocking, and it works great for a family home connection!”
The Road Ahead: Shaping the Future of Sovereign DNS Security
The positive reception shows that the DNS4EU initiative has achieved more than just technical goals – it has proven how a united coalition of cybersecurity leaders has been able to drive real momentum toward a more secure and sovereign digital Europe. As discussions, pilots, and deployments expand, DNS4GOV is set to play a key role in protecting government institutions and critical sectors far beyond Europe’s borders.
George Buhai, Government Liaison at Whalebone, stated:
“Government and Public sector agencies need more than just basic DNS resolution, they need secure and sovereign infrastructure they can trust. The momentum in discussions and pilot programs that we’ve seen since June proves that our vision resonates far beyond the EU.”
Whalebone will continue its collaboration with government partners, CERTs, and academic institutions to advance the adoption of DNS4GOV.
