DNS set up guidelines

Whether you're setting up DNS on your computer, smartphone, or network equipment, we've got you covered with clear instructions to ensure a smooth and efficient setup.

Windows

WINDOWS 10

  1. Open Settings: Click on the Start menu, then select "Settings" (the gear icon).

  2. Navigate to Network & Internet: Choose "Network & Internet," then click on "Wi-Fi" for wireless connections or "Ethernet" for wired connections.

  3. Access Adapter Options: Click on "Change adapter options".

  4. Modify Properties: Right-click on your active network connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and select "Properties".

  5. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4): Click on it, then click on the "Properties" button.

  6. Enter DNS Servers: Select "Use the following DNS server addresses" and enter the IP address based on your filtering option.

  7. Save and Close: Click "OK" to save your changes.

WINDOWS 11

  1. Open Settings: Press the Windows key, then select the "Settings" gear icon from the Start menu.

  2. Navigate to Network & Internet: Select "Network & internet" from the sidebar options.

  3. Choose your Connection Type:

    • For Wi-Fi connections, click "Wi-Fi" and then click on your connected network.

    • For Ethernet connections, select "Ethernet" and then click on your network connection.

  4. DNS server assignment: Scroll to the "DNS server assignment" section and click on "Edit".

  5.  Enable Manual IP Assignment: Switch to the "Manual" from the dropdown menu.

  6. Configure DNS:

    • Enable the toggle for "IPv4" or "IPv6," depending on protocol you leverage.
    • In the "Preferred DNS" field, input the IP address based on your filtering option.

     

  7. Save Changes: Click "Save" to apply your new DNS settings.

MacOS

  1. Open System Settings: Click on the Apple menu, then select "System settings".

  2. Go to Network: Select the "Network" icon.

  3. Choose your Connection: Click on your active network connection (Wi-Fi or different active connection) on the right, then click on the "Details... " or "Advanced" button.

  4. Open DNS Settings: Go to the "DNS" tab.

  5. Add DNS Servers: Click the "+" button to add new DNS server addresses. Input the IP address based on your filtering option.

  6. Apply Changes: Click "OK", then "Apply" to save your changes.

Linux Ubuntu

  1. Open Network Settings: Click on the network icon in the system tray, then select "Network Settings" or "Connections" depending on your distribution.

  2. Edit Connection: Choose your active connection and click on the "Settings" or "Edit" button.

  3. Navigate to IPv4 or IPv6 Settings: Go to the "IPv4 Settings" or "IPv6 Settings" tab.

  4. Enter DNS Servers: In the "DNS" field, enter the desired IP address based on your filtering option.

  5. Save and Reconnect: Save your settings and reconnect to the network for the changes to take effect.

 

Android

Note: The exact steps might vary slightly depending on your Android version and device manufacturer.

 

  1. Navigate to Settings

  2. Tap Network & Internet

  3. Select Advanced settings

  4. Tap Private DNS

  5. Choose Private DNS provider hostname

  6. Enter the DoT (DNS over TLS) address you have chosen based on the preferred filtering option.

  7. Save: Save the changes.

 

iOS (iPhone/iPad)

  1. Open Settings: Tap on the "Settings" icon.

  2. Go to Wi-Fi: Tap on "Wi-Fi".

  3. Select Network: Tap on the information (i) icon next to the Wi-Fi network you're connected to.

  4. Configure DNS: Tap on "Configure DNS".

  5. Manual DNS Setup: Select "Manual," then tap "Add Server" to enter the IP address based on the preferred filtering option.

  6. Save: Tap "Save" to apply your changes.

 

Home routers

  1. Access Router Settings: Open a web browser and enter your router’s IP address in the address bar. Press Enter. (The default IP address differs based on the router vendor or your specific network settings. Please check the manual of the home router.)

  2. Log In: Enter your router’s username and password. If you haven’t changed these, they might be the default settings listed in the router’s manual or on the device's back itself.

  3. Find DNS Settings: Look for a section labeled "DNS Settings," "Network Settings," or something similar. This might be under "Advanced Settings" or "Internet Settings".

  4. Enter DNS Server Addresses: Replace the existing DNS server IP addresses based on the preferred filtering option.

  5. Save and Apply: Save your changes. You might need to reboot the router for the changes to take effect.

Important Note: The exact steps might vary depending on your router model. Always refer to your router's manual for specific instructions.

 

Browsers (DNS over HTTPS)

Google Chrome

  1. Access Settings: Click on the three dot menu in the top-right corner of Chrome, then select "Settings".

  2. Navigate to „Privacy and Security“: In the left-hand menu, select "Privacy and security".

  3. Enable Secure DNS: Scroll down to the "Security" section and enable the "Use secure DNS" toggle switch.

  4. Select DNS Provider to “Add custom DNS service provider”

  5. Enter the DoH (DNS over HTTPS) address based on the filtering option selected above: <selected-address>/dns-query

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Access Preferences: Click on the three-line menu button in the top-right corner, then select "Settings"

  2. Navigate to Privacy & Security: In the left-hand menu, click on "Privacy & Security."

  3. Enable DNS over HTTPS: Scroll down to the "DNS over HTTPS" section and enable the "Enable DNS over HTTPS" by selecting "Increased Protection" or "Max protection" button.

  4. Choose a DNS Provider:
    Custom Provider: Select "Custom" and enter the DoH (DNS over HTTPS) server address based on the preferred filtering option.  


Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Edge Settings: Click on the three dots in the top-right corner of Edge to open the menu, then select "Settings".

  2. Go to Privacy, Search, and Services: On the left pane, select "Privacy, search, and services".

  3. Scroll to Security: Navigate down to the "Security" section to find DNS settings.

  4. Enable Secure DNS: Look for the "Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites" option and toggle it on.

  5. Select "Choose a service provider" and then enter DoH (DNS over HTTPS( address in the format <selected-address>/dns-query{?dns} based on the preferred filtering option.

 


Opera

  1. Open Opera: Launch the Opera browser on your computer.

  2. Access Settings: Click on the Opera menu button (usually in the top-left corner) and select "Settings."

  3. Type “system” into the search bar

  4. Enable DNS over HTTPS: Enable the "Use DNS-over-HTTPS instead of the system’s DNS settings" toggle switch.

  5. From the dropdown menu choose “Enter custom DNS query URL and fill the DoH (DNS over HTTPS) address based on the preferred filtering option.
